South Metro Health Services - Eating Disorder Service

Storyline Designs were engaged by South Metro Health Service to assist with the design & documentation of a new Eating Disorder Clinic opening up in the Cockburn Health Campus. This was a brand new specialist clinic being brought to the region, to offer services to patients dealing with varying eating disorders.  The space needed to represent the South Metro Health brand as well as the newly established brand, Kara Maar.  The clinic starts with a secure reception space, focusing on making patients feel welcome & comfortable, whilst offering a secure & functional work environment for employees.  Soft seating was selected with intent, including bariatric chairs which have an aesthetic of a comfy lounge chair, which allows for inclusivity for all patients.  The reception area had new access-controlled doors installed, to allow staff to control access through the space, allowing only invited access beyond this point.  Behind this reception area the staff work zone consisted of hot desking work rooms & a staff tea prep.  Flexible working is key to this clinic as many differing facilitators will be using the space at varying times. Adjacent to the reception space is a separate quiet lounge with patient lockers and a charging zone.  This leads into the communal dining room & kitchen.  This space has a large island bench with invisible cooktops built in & overhead feature exhaust hood, to allow for cooking demonstrations and teaching moments.  To support this, there are lots of built in cupboards and equipment.  Separate to this is a built-in laundry zone, off to the side in the large dining space.  This space is at the core of the facility and a hype of activity, crucial to a functional specialist service like this one.  Also leading off the quiet lounge is the access corridor to the various group rooms, consult rooms and family therapy rooms.  Varying the style & function of these spaces allows for flexibility in services offering and caters for the many different activities occurring at the clinic.  There is also a sensory room for patients use and a treatment room, which required a complete refit to ensure it was fit for purpose, allowing for built in body protected circuits to meet compliance codes.  The clinic has received a lot of positive praise and has been a huge success.  What a rewarding project to be part of.
